Monterey County record services. Birth/death records and marriage-certificate availability follow the specific official instructions linked below. Certificate copies and marriage-license applications are different services.

Online services & information

These links were found on official source pages. Each service is handled by the office.

Request birth or death certificates (opens in a new tab)[3]Official instructions

Official Monterey County certificate information and application options. Follow the county’s instructions for the copy type and request method you need.

Marriage license information and requirements (opens in a new tab)[8]Official instructions

Official county instructions for obtaining a new marriage license. Online application entry alone does not issue a license or replace the required appearance; confirm the license type, documents and visit arrangements.

Before you start

Deadlines · New marriage license — standard in-person application
You will BOTH need to come into the County Clerk's Office together to complete the process, with valid Picture IDs, within two weeks or the request will be deleted. [9]
Information & documents · New marriage license — standard in-person application
If either party has been granted a divorce within 90 days of applying for a new marriage license, a certified copy of the final divorce must be presented at the time of issuance. [10]
Payments · New marriage license — standard in-person application
Debit/Credit cards are also accepted in the office; a transaction fee of $2.50 applies. [11]
FBN / DBA filing instructions (opens in a new tab)[21]Official instructions

Use the county’s separate in-person and mail filing instructions. The link whose URL ends in on-line is labeled for mail filing; the URL name does not establish a fully online service.

Before you start

Deadlines · Initial filing — state deadline
File within 40 days after starting business under the fictitious name. [12]
Eligibility & access · Where to file — principal place of business
File in the county of your principal California business location. If you have no California business location, file in Sacramento County. [13]
Deadlines · New or changed filing — newspaper publication
Start publication within 45 days after filing. Use a qualifying newspaper in the filing county, or an adjoining county if no qualifying newspaper exists there. [14]
Information & documents · Newspaper notice — publication frequency
Publish once a week for four successive weeks. [15]
Deadlines · After publication — file the affidavit
File the publication affidavit with the County Clerk within 45 days after publication is completed. Check whether your newspaper files it for you. [16]
Deadlines · Expiration — earlier changes or abandonment can end the statement
A statement generally lasts five years, but changes or abandonment can end it earlier. [17]
Eligibility & access · No-change renewal — publication exception
An unchanged renewal filed within 40 days after expiration does not need republication. Changes can require a new publication. [18]
Information & documents · California principal business location
Provide the street address and county of the principal business location. A registrant’s separate mailing-address rule does not remove this requirement. [19]
Information & documents · Individual registrant — owner mailing address
For an individual owner, provide the full name and business mailing address if different from the business address. Do not apply older blanket residence-address instructions. [20]
Property inquiry and map access — county resource directory (opens in a new tab)[23]Official instructions

County directory links for property characteristics, value notices, APN/address/map-page searches and GIS. Select the resource matching your need; recording and tax-payment services are separate.

APN, address and map-page search referral (opens in a new tab)[24]Official instructions

County-linked ParcelQuest query for parcel identifiers and map pages. Provider terms and current availability apply.

County GIS mapping resources (opens in a new tab)[25]Official instructions

Official county-linked GIS mapping resource directory.

Property-value notice access (opens in a new tab)[26]Official instructions

County-linked property-value notice page; no individual parcel notice has been reviewed.

Record property documents — Monterey County (opens in a new tab)[27]Official instructions

County recording instructions for mail or in-person submission. Documents are recorded at the Salinas office; check required ownership reports and payment methods before sending.

Before you start

Availability · Recording location
Recording is available at the Salinas office only; there are no branch recording offices. [28]
Information & documents · Ownership transfers — PCOR
For a change of ownership, the buyer must file the completed PCOR with the recording. A missing PCOR adds $20. [29]
